Contrite Heart

"You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.  My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise."  -Psalm 51:16-17

The lid to my Christmas cookie jar broke!  Ken glued it back together the best that he could, but there was a small piece missing.  In today's Our Daily Bread James Banks writes about the Japanese art of mending broken pottery called Kintsugi.  Gold dust is mixed with resin to reattach broken pieces or fill in the cracks.  The veins of gold are used to add to the design rather than an attempt to hide the brokenness.  Banks writes, "When our heart is broken over a sin, God mends it with the priceless forgiveness generously offered by our Savior at the cross.  He receives us with love when we humble ourselves before Him, and closeness is restored."  It is important that we do not attempt to hide our sins, but rather confess them and humble ourselves before God so that He can mend our brokenness.  We will not be left with an open wound like my cookie jar!

I am grateful that with a contrite heart my sins and broken places can be used to make something beautiful in God's eyes.
