Arrogance

"But the LORD God called to the man, 'Where are you?'  He answered, 'I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.'"  -Genesis 3:9-10

Today's verse is the conversation between Adam and God shortly after he'd disobeyed and eaten from the "forbidden tree."  The apple tree in our yard is just starting this year's crop.  Soon we'll see the deer eating what has fallen to the ground.

When I read the passage in Genesis about mankind's "fall" what stands out to me is that after having such a close relationship with God Adam and Eve hid from Him after they'd disobeyed.  They should have gone to God right away and admitted their disobedience.  They'd been warned they'd die if they ate from that tree.  Why didn't they seek out God for help?  Adam says he hid because he was afraid.   For the first time he felt exposed--unprotected.  Yet, he still did not go to God.  When Adam disobeyed he made the choice to leave God's protection.  It is our arrogance--our sin of pride--our unwillingness to admit when we are wrong--that keeps us from admitting our need for God.

I am grateful that through faith in Christ God has made a way for me to come out of hiding.
