Deep Roots

"[Jesus] said to them, 'This is what I told you while I was still with you:  Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.'"  -Luke 24:44

In today's Our Daily Bread Mart DeHaan writes about the deep roots of the sequoia tree--unlike the roots of this tree growing on a pile of rocks off the Florida coast.  DeHaan shared these amazing (to me) details about the sequoia:  "It can grow to 300 feet in height, weigh over 2.5 million pounds, and live for 3,000 years.  But the majestic sequoia owes much of its size and longevity to what lies below the surface.  A twelve- to fourteen-foot-deep matting of roots, spreading over as much as an acre of earth, firmly grounds its towering height and astonishing weight."  He then went on to liken it to the "national history, religion, and anticipation that undergird the life of Jesus."  Jesus's life was foretold in scripture long before his appearance here on earth.  He was no "flash in the pan" Savior.  His roots run deep in history--in fact, John begins, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God......The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." (John 1:1, 14).

God's Word is powerful.  It is through His Word that the world was brought into being and by His Word that we are brought back to Him.

I am grateful for God's scripture that was fulfilled in Jesus and continues to work in and through me.
