"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."
-Hebrews 12:1-2a
When one of our sons married a few years ago Memorial Day weekend one of his aunts organized a Run/Walk/Crawl race for the family. They'd planned to run at a park in town but when temperatures rose to 100 degrees, it was decided to stay in the neighborhood so that those who opted-out early could return to the air conditioning. Their greatest challenge would be to make it back up our very steep driveway!
As Christians we are often faced with the same kinds of challenges in our race. Our race is marked out individually for us: There are those who have the capability to run long distances, those who are better at short sprints, and those who are slow and steady. God provides each runner with what he/she needs to complete the race. Verse 3 continues, "Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart." As we remember how Jesus was enabled to endure his race, we, too, will finish our race.
I am grateful for the "cloud of witnesses" cheering me on as I run the race set before me.
