Deep Wells

"'Sir,' the woman said, 'you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep.  Where can you get this living water?'" -John 4:11

We have this curiosity in our front yard.  First-time visitors often ask, "What is that little house that seems to be buried in your garden."  We explain, "It is a pit well."   Part of the "roof" covering the pit is hinged so Ken can climb down the 12-foot ladder to reach the actual pump.  From there the water in the well is another 90 feet below the surface.  Because we've had to have a new pump put in we found out the well of water is actually another 40 feet deep.  We live on a 1000-foot mountain ridge so our water has sifted through lots of rock before it collects in our well.  I think it's the best tasting water I've ever had!

When Jesus asked the woman at the well for a drink of water she was astonished that he, a Jew, would speak to her, a Samaritan.  Jesus used this opportunity to tell her if she knew who he was she would have asked HIM for a drink and He would have given her Living Water.  She pointed out to him that he had "nothing to draw with and the well is deep."  So Jesus told her, "Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.  Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life."

I am grateful that I know Jesus so that my well of Living Water will never run dry.
