Faithful Obedience

"The message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed."
-Hebrews 4:2

In today's Our Daily Bread Dennis Fisher writes about Israel's journey through the wilderness and how God instructed Moses to get water for the people by striking a rock with the same rod he struck the Nile.  But the people complained again when the food supply ran out, still not believing that God would take care of them.  In the Hebrews passage Paul explains that "they did not share the faith of those who obeyed."  Fisher writes, "When by faith we believe the promises of God's Word, we can experience rivers of living water and grace for our daily needs."

Last week we visited Bushkill Falls in Pennsylvania.  In the top photo the stream is so placid that it reflects the trees along the banks.  But as it reaches the precipice it begins to stir.  Then, spilling over the 100-foot drop, the placid water becomes alive, filled with power. . . .

We experience this kind of power in our lives when we put our trust in Jesus Christ, the living water.  He is one with God, the creator of all--the power within all that sustains life.

I am grateful that through faithful obedience I am filled with God's living water.
