The Price of Love

"The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was placed.  Then they returned to prepare spices and perfumes.  And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment."  -Luke 23:55-56

This 1936 photo of my father was taken as he was about to leave his parents' southern Mississippi farm.  He was just 16 and heading off to Michigan to live with an uncle to finish high school there with hopes of attending a nearby university.  My grandmother wept copious tears over her oldest leaving home.  For her, it was as though he had died as far as she was concerned because she did not know if she'd ever see him again.

The Bible passage is the only reference for what happened after Jesus's body was placed in the tomb on Friday and His resurrection on Sunday--"they rested."  If you've ever had someone you loved and were very close to and saw every day you can imagine how Jesus's disciples felt.  In addition, because they still did not understand that Jesus would rise from the tomb, they were probably struck with confusion.  Jesus was the promised Messiah, come to save God's people!  And now he was dead.   But praise God!  We know the rest of the story!

I am grateful that when I am heartbroken because someone I love is gone an even greater love will comfort me.
