An Invitation to Dine

"Sir," the servant said, "what you ordered has been done, but there is still room."  Then the master told his servant, "Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full."  -Luke 14:22-23

In Jesus's parable of the dinner several of his invited guests declined the invitation for various reasons so he told his servant to go "out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in." This parable highlights two things.  We are called to go out and invite people to Christ, and the guests who refused the invitation in the first place will not taste the kingdom of God (v. 24).

In Jesus's time the country lanes would have been filled with people walking from one place to another.  Today people are isolated in their vehicles and traveling at a much faster pace.  This, too, is a parable of how we've isolated ourselves from one another.  In the olden days we could walk along side someone, strike up a conversation, and eventually share the good news of Christ.  Today if you find yourself in the company of another, say on public transportation, chances are they are using an electronic device.  This is why the "Internet Highway" is a wonderful tool to reach people to "compel them to come in."

I am grateful for my computer and blogger.com to enable me to invite people to dine with Christ.
