The Golden Rule

"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."
-Matthew 7:12

The Golden Rule does not seem to be taught anymore.  I never hear it referred to even within Christian circles.  Instead it seems we live in a society that promotes "what's in it for me."  I think we should call this new rule the Steel Rule because it will eventually rust and everything you've accomplished using it will turn to dust.

As each of us takes the time to "put ourselves in another's shoes" by asking ourselves what we would want if we were in their place, we get a better understanding of how we should act.  It's very easy to get caught up in what we want without realizing the other person may have an entirely different take on the situation.  At the same time, if we are on the receiving end of someone's lack of consideration, we can help them by not reacting negatively, but instead try to explain our own point of view and seek a mutually satisfying solution.

I am grateful for people who are willing to work out disagreements in an open and honest way.

  1. So very true words. I continue to work on trying not to "react negatively" when someone is unkind to me. It is human nature to want to stand up for ourselves. However, we can still do that, but in a kind way by explaining why we were hurt by the unkindness. It is challenging.
