"I [Paul] urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness."
-1 Timothy 2:1-2
In today's Our Daily Bread Philip Yancey writes, "Often we surround ourselves with the people we most want to live with, which forms a club or a clique, not a community. Anyone can form a club; it takes grace, shared vision, and hard work to form a community."
We live in the Washington, DC area so politics is our local news. More than ever, it seems, people are forming their own little cliques as they take sides. This is not surprising "in the world," but it shouldn't be happening in the Church. We are called to pray for our leaders--not that they will succeed in THEIR agenda, but rather that they will humble themselves and subject themselves to God. As the community of Christ we should endeavor to love everyone--especially those outside the church--so that they will be shown who Christ is. We have a duty to our country as its citizens, but it is Christ Jesus whom we pledge our allegiance to first. It is His cause--love--that we serve.
I am grateful that my leader is Christ Jesus.
