Freedom from Sin

"Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness."  Romans 6:19b

This is my cat, Poetry, sitting on the window sill watching this hawk.  I do not let her outside.  This is one of the reasons why.  She is not at all happy about not being able to go out especially when she sees our dog go out.  She will sit by the door thinking that is all it takes to be let out.  Sorry, Poetry.  It is for your own good!

In today's verse Paul is telling the Romans that they are slaves to sin--they are not as free as they think they are.   Sin causes all sorts of despair in a person's life and often leads to an early death--not just in this life, but for eternity.  We are slaves because we can't help but sin when we are left to our own devices.  But in Christ we are made righteous and no longer NEED to sin.  We have the Holy Spirit to enable us to live a righteous life--one pleasing to the Lord.  To those without the Holy Spirit it may look like we have all these "thou shalt nots" keeping us from having "fun," but as Paul said we are all slaves to something.  I would much rather be a slave to Love than to the fear that generates a life of sin.

I am grateful that I have the Holy Spirit to lead me into righteousness, not only for His sake, but for mine.
