Helping Others

"In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus." -Philippians 2:5

The mindset that Paul is referring to is in verses 3 and 4:  "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.  Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."

I think the true purpose of having children is to teach us how to "do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit."  Selfish ambition and vain conceit pretty much goes out the window when you become a parent--that is, of course, if you are a "good" parent.  These helpless little beings need us to survive at first.  Then they need us to teach them how to fit into society.  But most of all we need to teach them to love the Lord.  The best way to do this is by example.  In order to do all these things, we end up sacrificing our time, our money, our energy, and our personal comfort for them.  And who among us would not also sacrifice our life for our child if put in that position!  This is what Christ did for us.  All he asks of us is that we be like-minded towards those outside our family as well.  When we have the mindset of Christ Jesus and help others, God will see that we have everything me need.

I am grateful that I am able to help others.
