By Any Road

"Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have laid hold of it.  But one thing I do:  Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead."  -Philippians 3:13

John Owen, an English non-conformist church leader in the 1600s, preached:
My goal is God Himself. . .At any cost, dear Lord, by any road.

Oswald Chambers used this quote in his sermon:
"At any cost, by any road" means nothing self-chosen in the way God brings us to the goal.  There is no possibility of questioning when God speaks if He speaks to His own nature in me; prompt obedience is the only result. . . .The promises of God are of no value to us until by obedience we understand the nature of God.  We read some things in the Bible three hundred and sixty-five times and they mean nothing to us, then all of a sudden we see what God means, because in some particular we have obeyed God, and instantly His nature is opened up.
The road we choose, if we are trusting God to lead us, will be the road we need to meet God's goals.  We don't need to stand at the crossroads and try to decide which way to go.  If our eyes are on God's goals and our heart bowed to Him in obedience, our feet will take us down the road we need to go.

I am grateful that God leads me where I need to go.
