"Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed."
-Joshua 23:14
With the crazy weather we've been having this Autumn my rose bushes are still putting out buds. But these buds will not have a chance to open before winter sets in. They will not reach their potential.
Joshua's words to the men who would lead Israel after he died reminded the people that not one of God's good promises had failed to come to pass. But then he spoke of the consequences that God promised would befall them because they did not keep God's commands. These people will "go the way of all the earth" as we all do, but before they've lived their full lives.
Unfortunately, just like this rose bud through no fault of its own will not reach its potential, many of us will "go the way of all the earth" before we reach our potential. Because we live in a sin-filled world, many have their lives "nipped in the bud." But God sent His promised Son so that we might have eternal life with Him where we WILL reach our full potential.
God keeps His promises. This should strike fear in the hearts of men and women who presume upon His grace and continue in their defiance. But for those who trust in Him and lean upon Him and follow His precepts, they can rejoice!
I am grateful for God's promises.
